Okura Museum of Art
“The Okura Collection: The Beauty of Faith”

Many Buddhist statues and paintings were lost during an anti-Buddhist movement that swept Japan at start of the Meiji period. The industrialist Okura Kihachiro lamented this situation and he strove to protect these cultural properties. He built up a collection of fine Buddhist artworks dating from medieval times to the early modern period, including beautiful Buddhist images associated with Sakyamuni worship, Esoteric Buddhism and the Pure Land faith.
Kihachiro founded Okura Museum of Art to display these treasures. This exhibition focuses on the museum’s collection of Japanese Buddhist art. In doing so, the exhibition explores the prayers and aesthetic sensibilities of the people who made these treasures.
