Japanese Table Manners Workshop at Yamazato

 
 

Led by a table manners instructor certified by The Japan Hotel and Restaurant Service Development Association, Japanese Table Manners Workshop is available for one group per day. The workshop instructs participants in Japanese dining etiquette while they enjoy a meal at Yamazato. Participants are taught the finer points of Japanese cuisine and instructed proper table etiquette including how to hold chopsticks and dishes correctly.

Okura Museum of Art

 
 

Okura Museum of Art owns 2,500 items, including 3 national treasures (such as the Introduction of the Kokin Wakashu, a 10th century poetry collection), as well as 13 important cultural properties and 44 important works of art. The museum has spent years curating its vast collection of paintings, sculptures, writings, craft art works, and other stunning items from Japan and its neighbors to prevent them from being lost to time.

Vegan Buddhist Cooking Class

 
 

In partnership with : Deeper Japan

Bring balance to your body, and find Zen with your mind, through the plant-based cuisine of Buddhist monks. Buddhist beliefs discourage killing animals, so neither fish nor meat are consumed, and in most cases, traditional Buddhist cuisine is vegan. Adhering to mindfulness throughout the process, ingredients are treated with care and each part is incorporated into the meal.
Tour the temple near The Okura Tokyo and learn about the tradition of Shojin Ryori. Then cook and enjoy seasonal sweets served with Japanese green tea, inside the temple grounds.

Samurai Swordmaking Experience

 
 

In partnership with : Deeper Japan

Learn about the history and philosophy of Japanese sword making and then watch a demonstration by a swordsmith. Next, get hands-on and experience forging the iron sand, tamahagane (gem steel / jewel steel) with a hammer.
These days, there are approximately only 150 swordsmiths in Japan due to the difficulty in getting a national certification and the aging population. Witness the creation of this powerfully symbolic sword with a Japanese swordsmith at this experience.
